No Fewer Than Four Die In Ibadan Auto Crash

There was a ghastly auto crash in Ibadan on Monday, November 21, 2016 leading to the death of four persons including a school boy. The incident which happened along Apata – Omin Adio road involved two commuter buses coming from Omin Adio and a long Truck laden with Coca Cola crates with liquid content.
An eye witness told WSJ that the accident occurred around Wire and Cable area of Apata when the two commuter buses endeavored to overtake each other and almost collided with the Coca Cola truck. It was gathered that the driver of the truck maneuvered his way out of the difficult situation while the two buses had a head on collision leading to the death of four persons on the spot. The Coca cola truck driver, it was gathered did not wait to observe the resultant effect of the collision as he was given a hot chase by some area buys in the vicinity that commandeered motorcycle riders popularly called Okada. Luck however, ran out of the Truck driver as he was intercepted in the traffic near Apata bus- stop.

He was given a merciless beating as the rampaging area boys quickly alerted other miscreants in the neighbourhood to give the driver the beating of his life. The Motor boy however, escaped into the adjourning street while scores of miscreants swarmed around the driver who refused to alight from the truck for fear of being lynched. They deflated the tyres of the truck while the driver continued to receive beatings from all directions. Mother luck however, smiled on him when a police officer in mufti who happened to be an acquaintance of the miscreants in the area came to the boy’s rescue and dragged him out of the commotion on a motorcycle. But the miscreants pursued them both, hitting the boy with different types of objects with some strayed missiles landing on the police officer’s head.
From the ensued melee, they both stumbled and almost fell off the motorcycle. The police officer grabbed the troubled driver and dragged him on foot to a safe haven while the beating persisted. The driver continued to bleed profusely as the miscreants insisted that a boy was smashed to death while the driver was trying to escape with the truck from the scene of the accident.
The police officer finally succeeded in dragging the driver out of trouble with reinforcement from the Apata police station. The commotion created by the mild drama caused serious traffic congestion in the area as the incident coincided with the evening rush hour when workers were on their way back home.
In a related incident, there was another fatal accident along the same road opposite Tass College, near Omin Adio. The accident occurred at the Tass College bus stop as a result of over speeding by two commuter bus drivers and a 4Runner Jeep. Although, no one died on the spot, it was learnt that most of the victims sustained various degrees of injury with a baby bleeding endless in the head. When our reporter visited the scene of the accident, blood stains littered the ground while eye-witnesses were sighed holding their heads with the two hands in grief. Some women were seen weeping profusely. Relics of the fatality of the auto crash was visible as damaged parts of the crashed vehicles also litered the scene of the accident. The victims, it was gathered, were taken to the state hospital at Adeoyo with some of them almost unconscious.
