PDP Raises Alarm Over INEC’s Plot To Cause Security Breach

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers state has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of plotting to cause security breach in the state by upholding an election announced by INEC despite a subsisting court order restraining it from doing so.
The PDP publicity secretary in the state, Hon. Samuel Nwanosike, told reporters at the party secretariat that the court order granted by Justice A. M. Liman, of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt on June 29, 2016, in suit no FHC/PH/CS/523/2016, restrained INEC from upholding the election since it was postponed by INEC and did not hold.
According to the New Telegraph, the party spokesperson said the election did not take place in Tai local government area, yet INEC was bent on announcing the result in favour of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He said: “In the restraining order, Justice Liman said: “I am convinced that if on factual ground it is established that while the defendant has effectively suspended the election without fixing any definite date for a rerun and yet it is (as alleged) to issue out a result, there is a clear and urgent need to call upon it to explain the legitimacy of its action and it is for this reason that this application will be granted.” The PDP said the state’s REC, Aniedi Ikoiwak, said he would uphold the election despite his earlier stance that election did not take place.
The party called President Muhammadu Buhari to call Aniedi Ikoiwak to order. “The President’s ‘Change Begins with Me’ campaign should be respected. We don’t want anybody to throw Rivers State into crisis; Ikoiwak wants to cause security breach, the PDP said. The party also urged the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army, and the Nigerian Police to call INEC to order and avoid causing a security breach in the state. Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti state has lashed out at Governor Ayodele Fayose for accusing President Muhammadu Buhari of being the major problem in Nigeria. The party said Fayose is always criticizing the president because he is afraid of his impending day of reckoning when he would face the law for alleged official corruption, The Nation reports. This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 20, by the party’s spokesman, Taiwo Olatubosun.
